Greener Gadgets Design Competition 2009!
This years winner was a super clever design by Limor Fried of Adafruit Industries and Phillip Torrone of MAKE magazine. Their design took an ordinary power meter and modified it so that it wirelessly connects to the users twitter account. Essentially it not only lets the user keep track of their energy use by way of the internet, but makes this information public, naturally causing the user to feel perhaps a social drive to use less and less energy. Greener living by way of peer pressure! I think this little handy device does an amazing job of adding a social element to yet another aspect of our lives, and it plays on a genuine and natural tendency towards competition, the result of which is beneficial to everyone involved.
