Researchers at the University of British Columbia have created a 'Vampire Battery!' That's right folks a battery that runs on human blood! This 'huge discovery' is seen as a game changer in regards to surgically implanted devices like pacemakers and cochlear implants. With such a battery these devices could run on the patients actual blood, eliminating the need for their requisite surgical replacement. The blood acts as food for yeast located in the battery, the yeast 'consumes' the sugars in the blood, and as a result creates energy that is converted to electricity. Though this process has yet to create enough power to run an implanted device, that is this the eventual goal. This discovery is an exciting leap in coming closer to more effectively treating a range of diseases and disorders that require surgical implants into patients.
